Hideo Matsuura is a robotics and intelligent systems researcher whose work spans microrobotics, smart actuators, sensor fusion, and teleoperation. He is perhaps best known for his pioneering contributions to underwater microrobotics, particularly his development of micro mobile robots propelled by PZT (lead zirconate titanate) piezoelectric actuators. His 2002 papers on the swimming mechanism and steering control of these aquatic micro-robots garnered nearly 190 combined citations, establishing him as a key figure in piezoelectric-driven locomotion systems. Matsuura also explored optically controlled actuation, investigating bimorph PLZT actuators responsive to UV light, broadening the toolkit available for precision robotic control. His early work in the 1990s on multisensor integration using fuzzy inference and neural networks demonstrated a forward-thinking approach to intelligent sensing, later extended to industrial curved-surface cutting robots. He additionally contributed to wall-climbing robotics using vacuum-pad crawler systems and applied neural network inversion techniques to solve robot arm kinematics.
