About
Fumio Hara is a pioneering robotics and human-computer interaction researcher whose work has fundamentally shaped the field of emotionally intelligent machines. Best known for his development of the "Face Robot" and the concept of the "Active Human Interface (AHI)," Hara devoted much of his career to enabling meaningful, emotion-aware communication between humans and intelligent machines — what he evocatively termed "heart-to-heart" interaction. His most influential contributions, collectively garnering hundreds of citations, center on KANSEI communication — the transfer of sensitivity and emotional nuance between humans and robots. Through a series of landmark studies beginning in the early 1990s, Hara demonstrated that machines could both recognize and realistically reproduce the six basic human facial expressions in real time, leveraging neural networks and sophisticated facial mechanics. His 1994 papers on the Face Robot (68 and 47 citations respectively) remain foundational references in social robotics. Beyond emotional robotics, Hara also made notable contributions to multi-robot coordination and evolutionary design of robotic morphology using genetic programming, revealing a broad systems-level perspective on intelligent machines.
