About
Davide Rizzi is a robotics researcher whose work bridges the critical gap between theoretical algorithms and practical, real-world deployment. His primary research areas include autonomous navigation, self-localization and mapping (SLAM), and open-source hardware/software platforms for rapid prototyping. Rizzi’s most impactful contribution is the Rawseeds project, which established a comprehensive ground truth collection system for indoor self-localization and mapping. This work, cited over 138 times, provided the robotics community with a standardized benchmark for validating and comparing SLAM algorithms, addressing a fundamental need for reproducible experimentation. Building on this, Rizzi developed the R2P (Rapid Robot Prototyping) architecture, an open-source modular system that drastically simplifies the transition from concept to functional robot. By offering both hardware and software building blocks, R2P has enabled researchers and students to iterate quickly on design ideas, reducing development time and lowering the barrier to entry for advanced robotics projects.
