Ali Abdul Khaliq is a robotics and artificial intelligence researcher whose work spans two compelling and socially meaningful domains: culturally competent social robotics and gas-sensing mobile robots. His most celebrated contribution comes from the CARESSES project, a landmark randomised controlled trial exploring how AI-driven, culturally aware robots can support the wellbeing of older adults in care homes. This pioneering work, which has garnered over 100 citations, demonstrated that robots capable of adapting their behavior to users' cultural backgrounds — from greeting styles to interpersonal distance — could meaningfully improve quality of life for elderly residents.
