About
Alex J. Chiluisa is a rising roboticist whose work sits at the intersection of continuum robotics, medical device design, and minimally invasive surgery. His primary research focuses on developing novel, miniaturized robotic systems for otolaryngology—specifically, for navigating the complex, confined anatomy of the ear and larynx. Chiluisa’s major contribution is a computational optimization framework that enhances the visual coverage of a notched-tube continuum robot for transnasal ear endoscopy. By combining anatomically-accurate 3D mesh models of the middle ear with sampling-based motion planning, his approach enables unprecedented access to the middle ear cavity, a notoriously difficult space to visualize. His most-cited work, “Computational Optimization of Notch Spacing for a Transnasal Ear Endoscopy Continuum Robot” (2020, 11 citations), lays the foundation for this technique. More recently, he co-developed a hand-held robotic optical fiber for in-office laser surgery of the vocal folds, detailed in “Light in the Larynx” (2022). This device promises to bring the benefits of traditional surgical treatment directly to the clinic, reducing patient trauma and cost. Chiluisa’s work is notable for its direct clinical translation, aiming to make complex ENT procedures safer, more effective, and more accessible.
