About
Yoram Koren is a pioneering roboticist whose foundational contributions to mobile robot navigation and obstacle avoidance have shaped decades of autonomous systems research. Working primarily at the intersection of robotics, sensor fusion, and real-time control, Koren developed some of the most influential navigation frameworks in the field. His most celebrated achievement is the Vector Field Histogram (VFH) method, introduced in 1991 with over 2,278 citations, which enabled mobile robots to detect and avoid unknown obstacles in real time while continuously pursuing a target. This built upon his earlier Virtual Force Field (VFF) approach from 1989 (1,254 citations), and was complemented by his rigorous mathematical critique of potential field methods (1,552 citations), establishing critical theoretical boundaries for the entire field. His Histogramic In-Motion Mapping (HIMM) technique further advanced real-time map building for moving robots. Beyond pure navigation research, Koren extended his work to meaningful human applications, co-developing the NavChair Assistive Wheelchair Navigation System to improve mobility for people with disabilities. His contributions to direct-drive robotics and ultrasonic sensing further demonstrate the breadth of his expertise. With cumulative citations exceeding 7,000, Koren's work remains essential reading for anyone entering mobile robotics or autonomous systems research.
