About
Sanju Lama is a pioneering researcher in surgical robotics and neurosurgery, whose work has fundamentally advanced the integration of robotic technology into complex brain and spine procedures. Best known for contributions to the neuroArm project — one of the world's first MRI-compatible neurosurgical robotic systems — Lama has helped shape how surgeons interact with intelligent machines in the operating room. His early work documenting the evolution and clinical deployment of neuroArm (2012, collectively nearly 200 citations) established a foundation for robot-assisted microsurgery, while subsequent studies quantifying the forces and workspace demands of neurosurgical dissection provided critical engineering data for next-generation device design. Lama extended this work to glioma treatment, demonstrating that image-guided robotic systems could improve precision in one of oncology's most challenging surgical contexts. His 2024 paper applying the IDEAL framework to surgical robotics evaluation (143 citations) reflects a broader commitment to rigorous, evidence-based standards in emerging technologies. More recently, his systematic reviews on continuum robots and neurointerventional robotics signal an expanding research vision. Across more than 580 cumulative citations, Lama's career represents a compelling bridge between neurosurgical practice and transformative robotic engineering.
