About
Peter Paik is a leading researcher in the field of physical human-robot interaction (pHRI), with a focus on the energetic behavior of human biomechanics during collaborative and teleoperated tasks. His work centers on the concept of "Biomechanical Excess of Passivity" (EoP)—the human limb’s innate ability to absorb interaction energy—which he has systematically quantified using nonlinear control theory. Paik’s major contributions include the development of Variable Structure Passivity Control (VSPC), a family of stabilizers that leverage EoP to enhance haptic transparency and safety in human-robot and human-human teleoperation. His most-cited paper (2022, 14 citations) introduces a power-based velocity-domain passivity signature control, while subsequent studies (2023–2025) explore the reliability of upper-limb myopassivity maps, the effects of muscle fatigue on energetic behavior, and hierarchical frequency-based energy separation for mediated interactions. Paik’s innovative use of multi-channel sEMG to correlate muscle activity with passivity maps has opened new avenues for user-specific, adaptive control. With a growing citation record and a clear trajectory toward safer, more intuitive robotic systems, Paik is shaping the future of human-centered robotics.
