About
Context in archaeology refers to the specific circumstances and spatial relationships in which an artifact, feature, or structure is found — including its precise location, surrounding materials, stratigraphic layer, and associations with other objects. In robotics and AI, the concept of context has been broadly adapted to mean the situational, environmental, or relational information surrounding a data point, sensor reading, or agent decision. Robots leverage contextual information — such as spatial positioning, semantic relationships between objects, temporal sequences, and environmental conditions — to make more informed and adaptive decisions. For example, a robot mapping an indoor environment uses contextual depth and visual data to interpret spatial relationships between objects meaningfully, rather than treating each sensor reading in isolation. Context matters because it fundamentally transforms raw data into interpretable knowledge: understanding *where* something is, *what surrounds it*, and *when* it occurred dramatically improves perception, planning, and interaction capabilities. Whether in archaeological excavation documentation or robotic scene understanding, context is the critical framework that gives isolated observations meaningful structure and enables intelligent reasoning about the world.
