Masami Ishida is a pioneering figure in the field of bipedal robotics, best known for his foundational work on dynamic walking. His key research areas include humanoid locomotion, robot control systems, and aerial inspection robotics. Ishida’s major contribution is the realization of dynamic walking with the biped robot WL-10RD, a landmark achievement that demonstrated how a two-legged machine could maintain balance and motion through active control. His 1985 paper on this subject, which has garnered over 250 citations, introduced a control method combining programmed pattern control during the single-support phase with variable torque and mechanical impedance at the ankle during the stance-switching phase—a concept rooted in the Zero Moment Point (ZMP) stability criterion.
