About

Luis Arciniegas-Mayag is a leading researcher in rehabilitation and assistive robotics, with a focus on developing intelligent exoskeletons and soft robotic suits to restore mobility for stroke survivors and individuals with neurological impairments. His major contributions span human-in-the-loop control, impedance-based backdrivability recovery, and biomechanical optimization of lower-limb exoskeletons—most notably through the AGoRA unilateral exoskeleton platform. His 2021 paper on human-in-the-loop control (23 citations) and his 2019 work on impedance-based backdrivability for knee rehabilitation (17 citations) have set benchmarks for safe, natural human-robot interaction. Arciniegas-Mayag has also pioneered the integration of ankle soft actuation to enhance gait symmetry (10 citations) and developed hidden Markov model-based gait phase detection for stance control (6 citations). His recent work extends to cable-driven exosuits for upper-limb hemiparesis, addressing activities of daily living. With publications spanning sensor systems using Fiber Bragg Gratings and comprehensive reviews on kinematics and impedance control, his research is foundational for the next generation of wearable robotic rehabilitation. His work directly impacts clinical practice by enabling more effective, patient-centered therapy.
