About
John K. Niparko is a pioneering figure in otology and neurotology, whose work has fundamentally advanced the surgical precision of cochlear implantation and stapedotomy. His research centers on integrating robotic assistance and advanced imaging to overcome the inherent challenges of microsurgery within the delicate structures of the ear. Niparko’s major contributions include the development and evaluation of cooperative manipulation microsurgical assistants, such as the “micropick” robot for stapedotomy, which demonstrated the potential to improve the accuracy of fenestrating the stapes footplate. He has also been instrumental in applying robot-assisted three-dimensional registration and virtual fixtures to guide cochlear implant electrode insertion, aiming to reduce trauma to sensorineural components and preserve residual hearing.
