About

Jessica Grzyb is pioneering the next generation of microscale power sources, tackling one of the most critical bottlenecks in the Internet of Things: the mismatch between shrinking electronics and their energy supplies. Her research focuses on the design, packaging, and fabrication of high-energy-density microbatteries for applications in medicine, wearables, and robotics. Grzyb’s major contribution is a revolutionary “nearly packaging-free” design paradigm that reimagines the battery itself as its own structural support, dramatically increasing the proportion of active materials. Her most cited work (2021, 37 citations) demonstrates how this approach yields lighter, more powerful, and energy-dense primary microbatteries. To address the critical challenge of hermetic sealing at the microscale, she developed a minimal-volume packaging strategy that boosts active material content by 2X to 5X over the best lab-scale and commercial cells.
