About
Hyosig Kang is a pioneering researcher in surgical robotics and human-robot collaboration, whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Beginning in the late 1990s, Kang dedicated his career to developing robotic systems that enhance surgical precision while enabling seamless collaboration between surgeons and machines. His most celebrated contribution, the EndoBot system, introduced a collaborative robotic assistant specifically engineered to support complex MIS procedures, garnering 58 citations and inspiring subsequent generations of surgical robotics research. Kang's work on autonomous suturing and robotic knot tying — notoriously demanding tasks even for skilled surgeons — demonstrated that robots could reliably execute some of surgery's most technically challenging maneuvers. Collectively, his publications on robotic surgical assistance have accumulated over 200 citations, reflecting their enduring influence on the field. Beyond soft-tissue surgery, Kang extended his expertise into orthopedic robotics, contributing to the development of the MAKOplasty RIO system, an interactive haptic platform for precision joint procedures. His research on enhanced teleoperation further broadened his impact into hazardous environment applications. Kang's body of work stands as a cornerstone in translating robotic intelligence into practical, life-improving surgical tools.
