About

Gyowook Shin is a pioneering researcher in soft robotics and stretchable electronics, whose work sits at the intersection of advanced materials, sensing technologies, and human-robot interaction. Best known for developing multifunctional soft sensors capable of detecting multiple types of physical stimuli simultaneously — work that has garnered over 220 citations — Shin addresses a critical limitation in the field where most compact sensors could previously register only a single deformation mode. Drawing inspiration from biological mechanoreceptors and proprioceptors, this research has significantly advanced the sophistication of robotic tactile systems. Shin has also made substantial contributions to soft actuation, designing fully soft electromagnetic artificial muscles that leverage microfluidic liquid-metal coils and bistable stretchable magnetic housings, accumulating nearly 60 citations since 2023. Complementing this, Shin developed direct-printing techniques for sub-30 μm liquid-metal patterns on complex three-dimensional surfaces, enabling more versatile stretchable electronics fabrication. Most recently, Shin has introduced soft electromagnetic sliding actuators capable of highly compliant planar motion, expanding the repertoire of soft robotic movement. Collectively, this body of work positions Shin as an influential voice in the rapidly evolving field of soft, bio-inspired robotics and wearable technologies.
