About

Thien-Dang Nguyen is a leading researcher in the design and modeling of continuum robots, with a particular focus on tendon-driven and tubular architectures for minimally invasive surgery. His work addresses the fundamental challenge of enabling precise, dexterous manipulation in highly constrained anatomical environments. Nguyen’s most influential contribution is the development of extensible, tendon-driven continuum robots, which combine the flexibility of non-linear, multi-curve shapes with the ability to actively vary their length—a critical capability for navigating deep, tortuous pathways. His seminal 2019 paper on model-based evaluation of path-following motions has garnered 191 citations, establishing a foundational framework for controlling these complex systems. Earlier, his 2015 paper introducing the extensible tendon-driven concept (128 citations) demonstrated how these robots can achieve superior dexterity compared to rigid-link manipulators. Nguyen has also pioneered the use of additive manufacturing to create patient-specific tubular continuum manipulators, enabling customized precurvature for individual surgical tasks. Through his research, Nguyen has significantly advanced the practical viability of continuum robots for clinical applications, bridging the gap between theoretical modeling and real-world surgical deployment.
