About

Shipeng Han is a leading researcher at the intersection of robotics, biomedical engineering, and minimally invasive surgery. His work focuses on developing flexible robotic systems—particularly snake-like robots—for single-port and natural orifice surgical interventions. Han’s major contributions include advancing inverse kinematics for redundant manipulators through novel geometric and deep learning approaches, such as the deeply-learnt damped least-squares (DL-DLS) method, and designing master-slave teleoperation systems with motion and force feedback for vascular and cardiac procedures. His highly cited review on flexible robotic systems for minimally invasive surgery (240 citations) and survey on tactile-sensing systems in biomedical engineering (80 citations) have shaped the field. Han has also pioneered Fiber Bragg Grating-based force sensing for robot-assisted cardiac interventions, addressing critical safety challenges. His work on motion and trajectory constraints for flexible surgical robots and teleoperated catheter systems for vascular surgery demonstrates sustained impact, with multiple papers receiving 15–44 citations. Through these contributions, Han is helping to realize safer, more precise robotic tools that reduce radiation exposure and orthopedic strain for surgeons while improving patient outcomes.
