About
A surgical robot is a computer-controlled mechanical system designed to assist, augment, or perform surgical procedures with greater precision, dexterity, and control than is achievable by human hands alone. These systems range from passive tool holders and image-guided positioning devices to sophisticated telemanipulators like the da Vinci system, which allows surgeons to operate through small incisions using articulated instruments controlled from a remote console. In robotics and AI, surgical robots integrate computer vision, haptic feedback, motion scaling, and increasingly machine learning to filter tremor, enhance visualization, and support autonomous or semi-autonomous surgical actions. They are used across specialties including orthopedics, urology, neurosurgery, and minimally invasive soft tissue procedures, and have even enabled transatlantic telesurgery. Their significance lies in enabling minimally invasive techniques that reduce patient trauma, blood loss, and recovery time while improving surgical accuracy. As AI advances, surgical robots are evolving toward greater autonomy, smarter decision-making, and adaptive assistance, making them a cornerstone of next-generation computer-integrated medicine.
