About
Jeong-Woo Choi is a pioneering figure in the emerging field of biohybrid robotics, where living biological tissues are integrated with synthetic materials to create soft, intelligent machines. His most celebrated contribution is the development of a tissue-engineered soft-robotic ray, inspired by the morphology of batoid fish. This biohybrid system, powered by patterned rat cardiomyocytes, demonstrated phototactic guidance—swimming and following a light cue—garnering over 700 citations and capturing global attention for its elegant fusion of biology and engineering. Beyond this landmark achievement, Choi has advanced the field by creating actuation-augmented biohybrids using gold nanoparticles and muscle bundles, significantly enhancing motion for drug evaluation applications.
