About

Jafar Adibi is a researcher whose work sits at the intersection of autonomous robotics, multi-agent systems, and machine learning. Based at USC's Information Sciences Institute, Adibi has dedicated much of his career to advancing the capabilities of intelligent, autonomous agents — particularly in complex, dynamic environments. His most influential contribution, "Building Agent Teams Using an Explicit Teamwork Model and Learning" (1999), garnered 92 citations and demonstrated how structured teamwork models combined with learning algorithms could dramatically improve coordination among autonomous agents. This work established a meaningful foundation for collaborative AI systems. A recurring focus in Adibi's research is robot soccer competition, which he leveraged as a rigorous testbed for integrated robotics challenges including real-time visual recognition, dynamic navigation, object tracking, and team collaboration. His papers on integrated and autonomous soccer robots reflect a sustained commitment to bridging theoretical AI with physical, real-world systems. Earlier work on the YODA project further illustrates his longstanding interest in robots that can autonomously bootstrap knowledge through exploration and discovery. Across his body of work, Adibi has consistently championed the development of robots and agents capable of learning from — and meaningfully interacting with — their environments.
