About
Bertram Rohrmoser is a pioneer in the development of autonomous service and industrial robotics, with a primary focus on creating machines that operate safely alongside humans. His most significant contribution is the design and implementation of a fully functional robotic road sweeper, based on the commercial KMR 1200 from Alfred Karcher GmbH. This work, which remains his most cited with 15 citations, details the complete hardware and software overhaul required to automate a heavy-duty municipal vehicle, establishing a foundational blueprint for autonomous cleaning systems. Rohrmoser further advanced the field of human-robot collaboration through his work on anthropomorphic robot assistants. He was instrumental in the development of two landmark platforms at Fraunhofer IPA: the home-care robot Care-O-bot and the industrial assistant rob@work. His research demonstrated how these systems could support flexible manufacturing and domestic tasks by cooperating directly with human operators. By bridging the gap between heavy automation and intuitive, safe human interaction, Rohrmoser’s work laid critical groundwork for the collaborative robots that are now standard in modern industry and service environments.
