About
A servomotor is a closed-loop actuator that combines a motor, position sensor (typically an encoder or resolver), and feedback control circuitry to deliver precise control over angular or linear position, velocity, and torque. Unlike ordinary motors, a servomotor continuously compares its actual output to a commanded setpoint and corrects any error in real time, enabling highly accurate and repeatable motion. In robotics and AI, servomotors are foundational components found in robot joints, robotic hands, humanoid platforms, exoskeletons, snake robots, flapping-wing vehicles, and collaborative devices. They drive the degrees of freedom that allow robots to walk, grasp, balance, and interact physically with their environment. Advanced control strategies—including impedance control, iterative learning control, sliding mode control, and visual servoing—are routinely implemented on top of servomotor hardware to achieve compliant, adaptive, or dynamically stable behavior. Servomotors matter because they translate high-level computational commands into reliable physical motion. Their precision, responsiveness, and compactness make them the default choice wherever controlled mechanical movement is required, underpinning virtually every articulated robotic system from rehabilitation orthoses to autonomous aerial robots.
