A Geiger counter is a radiation detection instrument that measures ionizing radiation — such as alpha particles, beta particles, and gamma rays — by detecting the electrical pulses produced when radiation ionizes gas within a sealed tube (the Geiger-Müller tube). In robotics and AI, Geiger counters are integrated into autonomous mobile platforms to enable radiation mapping in environments too hazardous for human entry, such as nuclear accident sites or areas with lost radioactive sources. The robot navigates through a space while continuously sampling radiation levels, building spatial maps that help responders identify contamination hotspots and locate lost radioactive materials. Beyond safety applications, Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes — devices operating on related single-photon detection principles — are applied in LiDAR time-of-flight systems for long-range 3D sensing in autonomous vehicles and surveillance robots. Geiger counters matter because they extend robotic perception into the electromagnetic and nuclear domain, enabling machines to operate safely where human presence would be dangerous or impossible.
