About
Masato Takemoto is a leading innovator in the field of advanced CMOS image sensors, with a primary focus on long-range, high-speed 3D time-of-flight (ToF) ranging systems. His most significant contribution is the development of a groundbreaking 1200×900 resolution Geiger-mode Vertical Avalanche Photodiode (Gm-APD) CMOS image sensor. This sensor achieves an impressive 450 frames per second and enables a 250-meter ranging system, a critical advancement for demanding applications in automotive LiDAR, surveillance, and robotics. To overcome the inherent trade-off between long-range and high depth-resolution, Takemoto pioneered a novel "Direct-Indirect-Mixed Frame Synthesis" technique, achieving configurable depth resolution down to 10 cm. This work, which has garnered over 30 citations, represents a major step toward practical, high-performance 3D vision systems capable of operating in challenging outdoor environments. By pushing the boundaries of single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array technology and sensor architecture, Takemoto is helping to shape the future of autonomous systems and long-range perception.
