About

Xiaoning Ma’s research lies at the intersection of human-robot interaction (HRI), social robotics, and intelligent control systems, with a focus on making robots more accessible and intuitive for everyday domestic and child-oriented environments. Ma pioneered the novel concept of integrating domestic robots into users’ social media contact lists, effectively transforming platforms designed for human-human communication into interfaces for human-robot interaction. This work, including the widely cited 2014 paper “Using Social Media Platforms for Human-Robot Interaction in Domestic Environment” (19 citations), proposes a robot management system that allows family members to interact with robots as they would with any social media “buddy,” lowering the barrier to adoption. Ma also contributed to the physical design and safety of child-oriented robots, developing compliant motion systems that enable safe, interactive physical contact. In control systems, Ma advanced two-wheel self-balanced robots by combining fuzzy logic with traditional PID control to improve stability under disturbance, and applied robust H∞ filtering for more accurate robot localization. With a cumulative citation count exceeding 50 across these key works, Ma’s interdisciplinary approach has helped bridge the gap between social media, intelligent control, and safe physical interaction, laying groundwork for more natural, socially integrated robots.
