Weifeng Zou is a pioneering researcher in soft robotics and deep-sea engineering, whose work has fundamentally reshaped how we think about machines operating in extreme environments. His most celebrated contribution is the development of the first self-powered soft robot capable of withstanding the crushing pressures of the Mariana Trench, a breakthrough published in 2021 that has already garnered over 1,100 citations. This achievement demonstrated that soft, bio-inspired materials—rather than traditional rigid pressure vessels—could survive and function at depths exceeding 10,000 meters. Zou’s research integrates tough hydrogels, phase-change materials, and magnetic actuators to create robots that mimic marine life, such as manta rays, for silent, efficient underwater navigation. He has also advanced buoyancy control systems for deep-sea robots, replacing heavy hydraulic components with electrothermal and dielectric elastomer actuators.
