About

W. Galbraith has pioneered the integration of miniature robotics with ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation (NDE), creating autonomous inspection systems that can access hazardous or inaccessible areas where manual inspection is impractical. Their core research focuses on reconfigurable robotic platforms, air-coupled ultrasonic scanning, and Lamb wave generation for structural health monitoring. Galbraith’s most influential work, “A Noncontact Ultrasonic Platform for Structural Inspection” (2011, 47 citations), established a foundation for cost-effective, safe robotic NDE. This was complemented by “Simulation of ultrasonic lamb wave generation, propagation and detection for a reconfigurable air coupled scanner” (2010, 32 citations), which advanced simulation techniques for guided wave inspection. A notable achievement is the development of the “Automatic ultrasonic robotic array” (2013), a novel autonomous phased-array inspection robot designed to reduce manual labor and enable inspection of previously inaccessible structures. Galbraith also explored data fusion in automated systems (2008), demonstrating how teams of heterogeneous robotic vehicles can synergistically combine multiple NDE methods to overcome individual sensor limitations. With cumulative citations exceeding 100, Galbraith’s work has been instrumental in moving NDE from manual, labor-intensive processes toward intelligent, autonomous robotic fleets capable of rapid, quantitative structural mapping.
