Tatsuo Goto is a pioneering figure in intelligent robotics, whose visionary work in the early 1970s laid the groundwork for machines that could see, think, and act. His core research focused on endowing robots with cognition and decision-making abilities, enabling them to interpret visual data and physically manipulate their environment. Goto’s most celebrated contribution, the prototype intelligent robot described in his 1972 paper, could recognize three-dimensional objects from plan drawings and assemble them using a camera, articulated hand, and computer—a remarkable feat of integration that has earned 57 citations.
