About
Stephan Balvert pioneers the intersection of computational biomechanics and collaborative robotics to make physical therapy safer and more effective. His research focuses on developing "biomechanics-aware" robot systems that understand a patient’s internal physical state—specifically, the strains on muscles and tendons—to prevent injury during rehabilitation. In his most cited work (30 citations), Balvert equipped an industrial collaborative robot with a musculoskeletal model of the shoulder, enabling it to sense and avoid dangerous forces during therapy. He further advanced this concept by integrating high-resolution biomechanical models with impedance control to monitor rotator cuff tendon strains in real time, allowing both patients and remote therapists to guide the robot safely through shared authority. This work directly addresses a critical barrier to robot-mediated physiotherapy: the risk of unintended harm. By giving robots an "awareness" of internal body mechanics, Balvert is laying the groundwork for a new generation of intelligent, collaborative rehabilitation devices that are both powerful and inherently safe.
