About

Shusheng Bi is a prominent robotics researcher whose work spans bio-inspired robotics, autonomous systems, and industrial automation. Based at a leading Chinese research institution, Bi has made substantial contributions across three interconnected domains: biomimetic underwater robots, compliant legged locomotion, and robotic manufacturing systems. Bi is perhaps best known for his sustained investigation into fish-inspired robotics, particularly robots modeled after the cownose ray and manta ray. Beginning with early pectoral fin propulsion studies in 2007, his team progressively refined their designs through mechanical optimization, central pattern generator-based control, and fuzzy algorithms, producing increasingly agile and naturalistic underwater vehicles — work that has collectively garnered hundreds of citations. His 2012 survey on bio-inspired compliant legged robots (116 citations) further established him as a synthesizing voice in biomimetic locomotion research. Beyond biological inspiration, Bi has contributed meaningfully to industrial robotics, with his robotic drilling system for titanium structures (102 citations) demonstrating real-world manufacturing impact. More recently, his DRE-SLAM work (67 citations) extended his reach into dynamic environment mapping for mobile robots. Across more than a decade of research, Bi's body of work reflects a cohesive vision: bridging biological principles with practical robotic engineering.
