About
Remo Pillat’s research bridges the physical and digital worlds, focusing on robotics, teleoperation, and human-avatar interaction. A key contributor to autonomous navigation, Pillat co-authored a foundational paper on the DARPA Urban Challenge (68 citations), which demonstrated a practical, sensor-frugal approach to enabling robots to navigate complex urban environments—a milestone in self-driving vehicle development. Expanding into human-robot collaboration, Pillat introduced the AMITIES framework (42 citations), a unified system for individualized avatar-based interactions that allows remote operators to control surrogates in real time, with applications in telepresence and assistive robotics. This work is complemented by methods for compliance estimation during bilateral teleoperation (5 citations), enabling robots to sense object properties remotely. Pillat’s recent contributions to the widely-used textbook *Robotics, Vision and Control* (39 citations) and chapters on robot arm kinematics and mobile robot vehicles (3 and 2 citations) have helped educate a new generation of roboticists. By integrating practical design, intuitive control, and educational impact, Pillat has advanced both the theory and application of robotic systems, making complex technologies more accessible and effective.
