About

Peter North is a leading figure in satellite-based aerosol remote sensing, whose work has fundamentally advanced how we observe and understand atmospheric aerosols from space. His research focuses on developing and merging long-term, high-quality aerosol optical depth (AOD) records from multiple satellite instruments, creating consistent climate data records that span decades. North’s most impactful contribution is his pioneering work on merging regional and global AOD records from major satellite products, a 2020 paper that has garnered over 210 citations and provides the foundational framework for harmonizing disparate satellite datasets. He has also developed novel retrieval algorithms for the AATSR instrument, enabling accurate AOD and land surface reflectance measurements, and led major intercomparison studies like AeroCom–AeroSat that evaluate satellite products against climate models.
