About
Remote sensing is the acquisition and analysis of information about objects, surfaces, or phenomena from a distance — typically using sensors aboard satellites, aircraft, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) — without direct physical contact. It encompasses a broad range of technologies, including optical imaging, LiDAR, radar, and multispectral/hyperspectral sensors, which capture data such as reflected sunlight, thermal emission, or backscattered laser pulses. In robotics and AI, remote sensing plays a critical role in enabling autonomous systems to perceive and interpret their environments: LiDAR point clouds support 3D object detection and SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping), while satellite and UAV imagery informs environmental monitoring, navigation, and mission planning. Algorithms ranging from deep neural networks to physics-based inversion models are applied to extract actionable information — such as aerosol optical depth, terrain structure, or obstacle geometry — from raw sensor data. Remote sensing matters because it provides the spatial awareness and environmental intelligence that autonomous systems, scientific missions, and Earth observation programs depend on to operate effectively at scale.
