About
Mohamed Nassim Boushaki is a leading roboticist at the intersection of medical robotics and physical human-robot interaction (pHRI). His research focuses on enhancing safety and dexterity in robotic systems, with major contributions to haptic feedback, variable stiffness actuation, and concentric-tube robots. Boushaki’s seminal user study on the da Vinci Research Kit (dVRK), cited 59 times, challenged the assumption that surgeons can fully compensate for absent haptic feedback, revealing critical performance gaps in grasping and palpation tasks. He further advanced surgical robotics by developing dynamic models for interaction wrench estimation (24 citations) and optimizing concentric-tube robots for deep brain tumor surgery (10 citations). In pHRI, Boushaki pioneered the Series Elastic Actuator with Discretely Adjustable Stiffness (SEADAS, 22 citations) and the irisVSA—an infinite-rotation, infinite-stiffness actuator (11 citations)—enabling rapid stiffness switching for safer human-robot collaboration. His work on supernumerary robotic limbs for hemiplegic patients (11 citations) and collision detection via continuous wavelet networks (2024) underscores his commitment to assistive and safe robotics. With over 180 citations, Boushaki’s research is shaping the future of intuitive, safe, and adaptive robotic systems.
