About

Joe Saunders is a prominent researcher at the intersection of human-robot interaction, assistive robotics, and developmental robotics, whose work has profoundly shaped how robots learn from and work alongside humans. His early contributions established foundational approaches to robot learning, most notably through imitation-based and scaffolded teaching methods — his 2006 paper on moulding robot behaviour through social learning principles has accumulated 126 citations and remains a touchstone in the field. Saunders has been equally influential in connecting robotics with cognitive science, co-authoring a highly cited 2010 roadmap (167 citations) proposing that humanoid robots can illuminate human sensorimotor, linguistic, and social development. A significant thread of Saunders' research addresses the growing challenge of caring for ageing populations. Through projects such as ACCOMPANY, he has pioneered end-user personalisation of companion robots in smart-home settings, with his 2015 "Teach Me–Show Me" study earning 130 citations. His commitment to safety and reliability led to important work on formal verification for autonomous robotic assistants. Across more than a decade of research, Saunders has consistently championed robots that are not only capable and adaptive, but genuinely trustworthy partners in everyday human environments.
