About
Fangyi Guan is a rising leader in the field of flexible electronics and soft matter engineering, with a primary focus on developing advanced materials for next-generation sensing and actuation. Her most impactful work addresses a critical challenge in flexible pressure sensors: achieving both high sensitivity and high linearity over a broad pressure range. In her landmark 2022 paper, which has garnered over 300 citations, Guan introduced "graded interlocks" for iontronic pressure sensors, ingeniously overcoming the inherent incompressibility of soft materials to enable precise, wide-range tactile sensing for applications in robotic sensation and human health monitoring. Beyond pressure sensing, she has pioneered dual-stimuli-responsive polymer composites capable of ultrawide, tunable stiffness ranges triggered by water and temperature—a breakthrough with significant implications for soft robotics and reconfigurable devices. Guan’s work also includes durable, bio-assembled electrode designs for pressure sensing, demonstrating her commitment to sustainable and robust material solutions. Through these contributions, she has established herself as a key innovator at the intersection of materials science and bio-inspired engineering, with her research consistently pushing the boundaries of what flexible, responsive materials can achieve.
