About

Qibing Pei is a pioneering materials scientist and engineer whose work has fundamentally shaped the fields of electroactive polymers, soft robotics, and stretchable electronics. Best known for his groundbreaking contributions to dielectric elastomer technology, Pei has spent decades advancing the science of artificial muscles — flexible, lightweight actuators capable of mimicking the power, strain, and efficiency of biological muscle tissue. His early landmark studies, including research on ultrahigh strain responses in field-actuated elastomeric polymers (2000) and comprehensive explorations of dielectric elastomer actuators and electroelastomers (2001–2002), collectively garnered hundreds of citations and established the conceptual and experimental foundation for the field. His innovative development of multi-degree-of-freedom electroelastomer roll actuators and biomimetic walking robots demonstrated compelling real-world applications of this technology. More recently, Pei has expanded his research into tunable-rigidity materials for robotics, intrinsically stretchable organic electronics, and hierarchically structured conductive hydrogels for wearable sensors and supercapacitors.
