Dimitrios Lambrinos is a pioneer in bio-inspired robotics, whose work bridges the gap between insect neuroethology and autonomous navigation. His research focuses on developing mobile robots that replicate the remarkable homing and path integration abilities of desert ants, particularly the *Cataglyphis* species. Lambrinos’s most influential contribution is his 2000 paper, “A mobile robot employing insect strategies for navigation,” which has garnered over 520 citations and demonstrates how robots can use a combination of visual odometry and compass cues to navigate without GPS. His earlier 1997 work on an autonomous agent using a polarized light compass (218 citations) was foundational, showing that robots could mimic the ant’s ability to determine direction from skylight polarization patterns.
