About
Anthony M. DiGioia is a pioneering figure in orthopaedic surgery, renowned for his foundational work in computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery (CAOS) and medical robotics. His research centers on developing image-guided navigation systems and robotic assistive technologies to enhance the precision and outcomes of joint arthroplasty, particularly total hip replacement. DiGioia’s landmark 1998 paper on an image-guided navigation system to measure acetabular implant alignment intraoperatively (414 citations) revolutionized the field by enabling real-time tracking of pelvic motion and implant positioning, addressing a critical gap in surgical accuracy. His influential reviews on CAOS (150 and 144 citations) established the conceptual framework for integrating medical imaging, computer vision, and robotics into orthopaedic practice.
