About
Xiaoyan Ma is a leading researcher in atmospheric aerosol modeling, with a focus on understanding the spatial and temporal distribution of dust and other aerosols and their climatic impacts. Her work is distinguished by rigorous model evaluation against observational data, advancing the accuracy of global and regional simulations. A key contribution is her comprehensive evaluation of the WRF-Chem model over North Africa, where she compared simulated dust extinction and vertical profiles against satellite (CALIPSO) and ground-based (AERONET) observations. This study, cited 30 times, provided critical insights into the performance of different dust schemes. On a global scale, her multi-year modeling with the GEOS-Chem-APM model, which has garnered 29 citations, revealed significant seasonal and spatial variations in aerosol optical depth (AOD). By benchmarking against multiple observational platforms, her work directly addressed the large diversity among global aerosol models identified by the AeroCom project, helping to reduce uncertainty in predictions of aerosol radiative forcing. Dr. Ma’s research is essential for improving climate models and our understanding of the dust cycle.
