About

Dr. Sijia Xu is pioneering the development of next-generation electronic skins (e-skins) capable of operating in the most extreme environments on Earth. Her research focuses on creating highly stretchable, self-healing, and sensitive tactile sensors that function at ultralow temperatures, as low as −78 °C. This work directly addresses a critical challenge in polar robotics: enabling robots to retain tactile feedback and self-repair capabilities in the harsh, freezing conditions of the Arctic and Antarctic. Her most-cited paper (86 citations, 2024) introduces a novel e-skin design that overcomes the brittleness and conductivity loss typical of materials at such temperatures, offering a robust solution for polar exploration. By merging materials science with soft robotics, Dr. Xu’s contributions are not only advancing fundamental knowledge in flexible electronics but also providing practical tools for scientific discovery in inaccessible regions. Her work stands out for its direct application to real-world exploration, making her a leading voice in the field of extreme-environment wearable technology.
