Seiji Inokuchi is a pioneering figure in the intersection of pattern recognition, music technology, and robotic vision. As the director of the laboratory at Osaka University, his research has fundamentally shaped how machines perceive and interact with the world. Inokuchi’s most celebrated contribution is the "Kansei Music System" (1989, 43 citations), an early and influential work that explored how computers could understand and generate music based on human emotion and sensibility. This project, which began with simple transcription experiments in 1978, laid the groundwork for affective computing in music. Beyond acoustics, Inokuchi made significant strides in anthropomorphic vision. He developed a series of retina-like visual sensors (1994–1997) that perform polar transforms, enabling robots to track objects and navigate with unprecedented speed and efficiency. These sensors, using a dove prism and linear CCD, were crucial for real-time applications like the "Virtual Performer" music-playing robots (1996). His work on 3-D object recognition using functional models (1992) further advanced robotic scene understanding.
