About
Jianan Xie is an emerging robotics researcher whose work sits at the dynamic intersection of human-robot interaction, legged locomotion, and intelligent control systems. His research focuses on developing intuitive, non-contact interfaces that allow humans to seamlessly command complex robotic platforms, as well as advancing motion generation for bipedal and quadruped robots operating in real-world environments. Xie's most recognized contribution — garnering 16 citations since its 2025 publication — introduces a dynamic hand gesture recognition framework for teleoperation of quadruped robots equipped with robotic arms, pushing beyond the limitations of static sign language approaches to enable fluid, real-time human control. Complementing this, his one-handed remote control method for mobile manipulators leverages MediaPipe and depth-sensing technology to make robotic operation accessible with minimal physical input. His work on human-inspired gait and jumping motion generation for bipedal robots using Model Predictive Control further demonstrates his breadth, addressing the critical challenge of mobility in complex human environments. Though early in his career, Xie's research agenda reflects a coherent vision: making robots more responsive, intuitive, and physically capable partners for human collaboration — a contribution of growing importance as humanoid and legged robotics rapidly advance.
