Haruo Yoda is a pioneering figure in intelligent robotics, best known for his foundational work in machine cognition and automated assembly. His research centers on developing robots capable of visual perception, spatial reasoning, and autonomous decision-making—long before these concepts became mainstream. Yoda’s most celebrated contribution is the creation of a prototype intelligent robot that could recognize and assemble three-dimensional objects directly from plan drawings, using vidicon cameras, an articulated mechanical hand, and a digital computer. This system, described in his 1972 paper (57 citations), integrated problem-solving functions that allowed the robot to interpret macro-instructions from a human operator, decompose complex spatial configurations, and execute precise assembly tasks. His earlier 1971 work (22 citations) further established the robot’s ability to perceive three-view plans and cognitively reconstruct objects.
