About

Danmei Ren is a leading researcher in physical human-robot interaction (pHRI) and adaptive robot control, whose work focuses on enabling robots to safely and intelligently collaborate with humans. Ren’s major contributions center on developing variable admittance and impedance control frameworks that allow robots to dynamically adjust their stiffness and damping characteristics in real time based on human inputs and task demands. Her 2019 paper on an extended DMP framework for learning variable stiffness manipulation (25 citations) provides a method for robots to acquire both motion skills and stiffness profiles from human demonstration. Ren’s 2017 work on impedance control for hydraulic legged robots (13 citations) introduced a novel velocity compensation algorithm for compliant leg behavior. She has also made significant advances in stability during pHRI, including real-time estimation of human hand stiffness and a vibration index to predict and eliminate instability (6 citations). Her 2020 paper on dynamical system-based variable admittance control (8 citations) further enables robots to reactively adapt damping characteristics. Ren’s research is foundational for applications in collaborative manufacturing, rehabilitation robotics, and assistive technologies.
