About
Antonella Benvenuto is a pioneering researcher in neural engineering and neuroprosthetics, whose work has fundamentally advanced the development of bidirectional interfaces between the human nervous system and robotic prostheses. Her key research areas include intraneural electrode implantation, sensorimotor integration, and sensory feedback systems for upper-limb amputees. Benvenuto’s most impactful contribution is the first-ever double nerve intraneural interface implant in a human amputee for robotic hand control (2010, 395 citations), demonstrating real-time neural signal extraction and motor command decoding. She further showed that such implants can modulate cortical plasticity, as evidenced in an EEG-TMS co-registration study (2014). Her work on thin-film multichannel electrodes for sensory feedback (2010, 17 citations) provided critical evidence that amputees can perceive tactile sensations through a prosthetic hand. Benvenuto also explored unconventional approaches, including insect-machine hybrid controllers for space robotics (2009).
