Elongation factors are proteins that play essential roles in the translation process, facilitating the movement of ribosomes along messenger RNA during protein synthesis. Specifically, they assist in delivering aminoacyl-tRNAs to the ribosome and promote the translocation steps that extend the growing polypeptide chain. Eukaryotic elongation factor 2 kinase (eEF-2K), for example, acts as a master regulator of translational elongation by phosphorylating elongation factor 2, thereby slowing ribosomal activity and modulating the rate of protein production in response to cellular conditions. In robotics and AI contexts, understanding elongation factors is increasingly relevant to synthetic biology applications, where engineered biological systems are designed to produce specific proteins for biosensors, soft actuators, or bio-hybrid robots. By controlling elongation factor activity, researchers can fine-tune protein expression levels, enabling more precise and efficient biological manufacturing pipelines.
