About

Zhi-Yang Liu is at the forefront of bioinspired soft robotics and smart materials, pioneering the development of autonomous, multifunctional actuators. His research centers on creating light-driven, self-sustainable systems that mimic the complex, multimodal locomotion of living organisms—a critical step toward truly intelligent soft robots. His most influential work, on "Seifert Ribbon Actuators" based on liquid crystal elastomers, demonstrates a single system capable of multiple, self-sustained gaits, achieving 84 citations and setting a new benchmark for autonomous motion. Complementing this, Liu has innovated "patterned photonic actuators" using a novel athermal embossing technique, enabling dynamic, synergistic shape-morphing and color-changing capabilities in response to stimuli. This work, with 30 citations, addresses a major challenge in integrating structural color with mechanical deformation. By merging advanced materials science with bionic design, Liu’s contributions are not only highly cited but are also laying the essential groundwork for next-generation soft robots that can sense, adapt, and move with unprecedented autonomy and sophistication.
