About
William R. Doggett is a pioneering aerospace engineer and researcher at NASA Langley Research Center whose career has centered on advancing robotic and autonomous assembly of large-scale structures in space. His foundational work, documented in his highly cited 2003 paper on robotic truss assembly (92 citations), established critical groundwork for automated structural construction in orbit — addressing the fundamental challenge that many next-generation space science and Earth observation missions require apertures and systems far too large to launch in a single vehicle. Doggett's research has consistently bridged theory and application, exploring how modular architectures, autonomous robotics, and in-space assembly can enable resilient, long-duration space infrastructure. His 2016 work on in-space structural assembly applications (66 citations) demonstrated how advances in autonomy and plug-and-play design could transform exploration beyond Earth's orbit. He has also contributed innovations in robotic hardware, most notably the TALISMAN manipulator — a tendon-actuated, lightweight system optimized for space operations — and Intelligent Precision Jigging Robots capable of micrometer-scale accuracy. His concept of "Persistent Assets," maintained through recurring robotic servicing, reflects a forward-looking vision now gaining traction commercially. Across more than two decades of contributions, Doggett's work has meaningfully shaped how humanity plans to build its future in space.
