About

Reliability in the semiconductor context refers to the ability of electronic components, circuits, and systems to perform their intended functions consistently over time without failure under specified operating conditions. In robotics and AI, semiconductor reliability is critical because autonomous systems depend on microprocessors, sensors, power electronics, and communication chips that must operate continuously in demanding environments — including extreme temperatures, vibration, moisture, and electromagnetic interference. Engineers assess reliability through metrics such as mean time between failures (MTBF), failure mode analysis, and accelerated life testing, while techniques like redundant circuitry, fault-tolerant architectures, and predictive maintenance help mitigate component degradation. This matters profoundly because unreliable semiconductors can cause catastrophic failures in safety-critical applications such as surgical robots, autonomous vehicles, industrial manipulators, and unmanned ground vehicles operating in harsh field conditions. As robotic systems become more deeply embedded in healthcare, infrastructure inspection, and human-robot collaboration, ensuring that the underlying semiconductor hardware remains dependable directly determines whether these systems can be trusted to perform safely and effectively over their operational lifetimes.
